RECOMMENDED ACTION: Discuss legislative items and priorities for the 2012 session.
BACKGROUND
Representative Kurt Bills invited the council and some staff to a legislative event in Burnsville on
November 1st. Since that was a council meeting night, I sent regrets for myself and the council. Rep. Bills
subsequently suggested that he would be interested in coming to an upcoming Council workshop session.
I gave him the dates of our workshop meetings and he indicated that he could come to this meeting.
While we do not have any formal legislative agenda separate from the League of Minnesota Cities or the
Metro Cities organizations, we do have ongoing interest in such things as transit, the planned veteran's
memorial, and the Highway 42/52 interchange. Perhaps Mr. Bills will have some insights for us on state
tax policies, levy limits, and the new market value exclusion program and possible bipartisan efforts to
reform state government. Mr. Bills serves on the Capital Investment (bonding) committee, the Education
Finance Committee, and the Tax Committee.
