PREPARED BY: Dwight Johnson, City Administrator AGENDA NO. l_a_
ATTACHMENTS: Proposed Goals APPROVED BY:

RECOMMENDED ACTION: Approve the attached statement of goals for 2012 -13.
BACKGROUND
The Council met on January 20 and 21' to discuss goals for 2012 -13. After the session on January 21st,
staff worked with council member Kim Shoe - Corrigan to write up the results of the meetings. Council
members reviewed the draft at the February 15 workshop meeting and requested several relatively minor
changes which have been incorporated in the attached goals statement. Once the goals are adopted, they
will be included on the City's website and presented in the next City newsletter.
DISCUSSION
The proposed goals for this year include continued work on a variety of initiatives from 2011 including
economic development items, redevelopment of the Steeple Center property, a possible partnership with
DCTC and the YMCA for recreation facilities, and constructing a downtown Park and Ride lot. Other
continuing initiatives include constructing priority trail connections, developing a new web site, and
ongoing work with UMore Park to plan for future development there. A number of these projects
inherently require multiple years to plan and develop or are ongoing.
The 2012 -13 goals also include some new initiatives. More specifically, the Council has expressed interest
in expediting a number of small to medium projects in Downtown Rosemount centering on the Central
Park /Erickson Park area. These projects include paving Brazil Avenue and the Erickson Park parking lot,
improving the Erickson Park shelter building, moving up plans for a pedestrian underpass under Highway
3 and adding amenities in the area such as a splash pad, tennis courts, and senior exercise stations. In
addition, the Council has expressed interest in improving certain neighborhood and community amenities
such as benches along some trail segments and adding trees and landscaping to public places. We recently
heard about a DNR tree grant that may help with this. With the creation of more amenities in parks and
public spaces, the Council hopes that this will encourage more special events in the community.
RECOMMENDATION
If the City Council has no further changes to the draft goals statement, it is recommended that a motion
be passed to approve the goals statement for 2012 -13 as presented.
