RECOMMENDED ACTION: Consider the `attached proposed budget calendar and direct
staff on any changes.
BACKGROUND
Staff has already begun work on the 2013 budget. Since multiple meetings are needed to review the
budget on an annual basis and certain legal deadlines must also be observed, it is, helpful to lay out the
process and a schedule of meetings to guide us.
The attached schedule follows the pattern of the past several years that seems to have worked reasonably
well for us. We always have the option of adding an additional meeting beyond what the schedule
indicates should it become necessary to do so.

RECOMMENDATION
The Council is requested to review the attached proposed budget calendar and direct staff on any changes
desired.

April 3" — Beginvsetting up budget worksheets
April 3 Begin working on salary & benefit projections a
April 11 — City, Council Work Session — Discuss budget calendar
April 16 — Give staff worksheets to complete first draft`
Apri1,30 — First draft due to Finance Director
May 7 — Compile 1 draft of •budget in total
May 7 — May 25 — Meet with staff and make adjustments to 1 draft
June 1 — City Council sees draft copy of budget
June 13 — City Council-Work Session discussion on budget
June 14 — July 31 - Make any changes to draft budget
August 15 — City Council Work Session — Last chance before preliminary levy
September 4t — City Council Meeting — Approve preliminary levy
September 14 — Certify preliminary, levy & hearing dates to County before 9/15
November 14 — City Council Work, Session — Final preparations for Budget Hearing
December 4th — City Council Meeting / Budget Hearing - Approve budgets and levies
December 21 — Certify final levy to County between 12/20 & 12/31
