ISSUE The City of Rosemount is once again being recognized as a Tree City, USA. The Tree City, USA awatd is given to those cities that depict an honest and active program to promote the protection of our natural habitat and our trees. This is the City of Rosemount's 20` year of being recognized as a TXee City, USA. As part of our participation in the Tree City USA program, we must meet standards set by the National AYbor Day Foundation. One of those standards includes the observance of AYbor Day. SUMMARY It is the Parks and Recrearion Depaxtment's intent to join with the City Council, Commissions, and other Departments to further enhance our efforts relating to the preservation of our trees and to continue to refoYest the city. Attached is a proclamation naming May 5, 2012 as Axbor Day. The City will be observing our 20`�' Annual Rosemount Arbor Day celebration on Saturday, May 5, at Central Park, starting at 10:00 am. We will be giving away trees from six to eight feet in height FREE to residents of Rosemount and will be conducting a ceremonial tree planting. A variety of tree species will be available to the first 180 residents of Rosemount who have pxoof of residency. There is a limit of one tree pex household. These are bare root ttees that need to be planted within 24 hours of the giveaway. Staff would also like to remind those people receiving a tree to call "Gopher State One Call" at 651-454-0002 at least 72 hours befoYe you dig. xROSEMOU�rr MINNESOTA Whereas, In 1872, J. Sterling Morton proposed to the Nebraska Boazd of Agriculture that a special day be set aside for the planting of trees, and Whereas, this holiday, called Arbor Day, was first observed with the planting of more than a million trees in Nebraska, and Whereas, Arbor Day is now observed throughout the nation and the world, and Whereas, trees can reduce the erosion of our precious topsoil by wind and water, cut heating and cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce life-giving oxygen, and provide habitat for wildlife, and Whereas, trees are a renewable resource giving us paper, wood for our homes, fuel for our fires, and beautifying our community, and Whereas, trees in our city increase property values, enhance the economic vita.lity of business areas, and beautify our community, and Whereas, trees, wherever they are planted, are a source of joy and spiritual renewal. Now, Therefore, I, William Droste, Mayor of the City of Rosemount, do hereby proclaim May 5, 2012 as Arbor Day in the City of Rosemount and I urge all citizens to celebrate Arbor Day and to support efforts to protect our trees and woodlands, and Further, I urge all citizens to plant trees to gladden the heart and promote the well-being of this and future generations.
