ISSUE
One of the goals of the Port Authority is to increase the quantity of desirable underserved retail and
commercial businesses. An implementation strategy for that goal is to investigate and pursue niche
businesses in the community, which may not be as dependent upon population size. Staff has
provided a listing of commercial businesses, which is not all inclusive that can be a starting point for
this discussion.
The listing uses the North America Industry Classification System (NAICS) to categorize the various
businesses. This may help in understanding where the City has many service options for residents and
where the City may be underserved. Additionally, this may help the Port Authority recognize where a
niche might be in our commercial economy.
RECOMMENDATION
Staff would like to begin the discussion of niche marketing and what potential businesses may be
attracted to the community based upon the existing local economy. Further discussions with the
Port Authority and property management companies should occur to determine feasibility of
business attraction.
