Rosemount's Chief of Police, Gary Kalstabakken, submitted his retirement norice to the City
Admuiistrator last week.
Chief Kalstabakken was appointed by the City Council after a search that involved more than 60
applicants. He began his leadership of the force in January 1998. During his tenuse, the Department grew
to keep pace with the increased population of the community and of calls for service. Despite those
increases, the rate of repoxted crime declined in most categories in Rosemount.
The Chief wrote the City's emergency preparedness plan and headed up response to major events. He
worked with other City staff inembers to support a group of community leaders that meets regularly on
issues affecting young people. Chief Kalstabakken implemented community education and outreach
programs, including Coffee with a Cop, Public Safety in the Parks, Night to Unite, and the Citizen Police
Academy. He served in 2003 as the interim execurive director of the City's staff when the position of City
Administrator was open.
The Chiefls final day with the Department will be May 31. Despite his retirement, he will continue his
seYVice toward public safety in a position with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
