Each year 100,000 students around the world take part in a program called "Destination ImagiNation."
Last month, a team of students from Shannon Park Elementary School who called themselves "Argentina
Apples" competed at the global competition in Knoxville, Tenn. They placed 28 in their division.
In D.I., participants work as a team for eight to 12 weeks to create a unique solution to a Team Challenge,
which can have a focus that is theatrical, structural, improvisational, scientific, or technical — or a blend of
several disciplines. Teams also learn and practice creative quick - thinking skills for the "Instant Challenge"
portion of the program. Destination ImagiNation is intended to help young people learn in a fun and
supportive environment, and the valuable skills they acquire will be with them for a lifetime.
The Shannon Park team competed in the "scientific solar stage challenge." Team members spent several
months working to incorporate several re required criteria into their presentation: performance
g q ed c teri a to the p ese tation• a theatrical pe or ance
that tells a story about the use of solar energy; integrating research about past or present uses of solar
energy; designing and creating a solar energy prototype to demonstrate a new way to collect, capture, and
use solar energy; and designing and providing theatrical lighting to illuminate their presentation with
special theatrical effects.
In the story the team told, the sun loses most of its power due to pollution. The sun sneezes, creating a
huge tsunami, causing a worldwide power outage. The team creates a "solar- powered rocket launcher." It
shoots solar energy bottles up to the sun and is able to relight it.
The members of Argentina Apples are:
Ben Christiansen
Charlie Johnson
Brett Pettit
Sam Powell
Jake Simons
Lucian Westbrock and
Jonathan Wise
The team is coached by Theresa Wise and Brenda Powell with the support of Principal Michael
Guthrie.
