ATTACHMENTS: None APPROVED BY: RECOMMENDED ACTION: Presentation of certificates of commendation Two Rosemount students have been recognized this spring for excellence in the quality of their writing. Alexandra McLaughlin was one of two first place winners in a national competition held by the Library of Congress for high school students. Fifty-nine thousand students around the country entered the "Letters About Literature" contest by writing a message to an author whose work changed the students' view of the world or themselves. Alexandra wYOte to Tixn O'Brien, author of The Thing.r They Carrzed, a collection of stories about a platoon in the Viemam War. As a national winner,Alexandra receives a $500 Target gift card. She was also invited to designate a favorite library to receive a Target$10,000 Reading Promotion grant. She chose the Robert Trail Library. Alexandra graduated this month from Rosemount High School. Carly Kuran is one of 274 students narionwide to receive honors in the 2012 Narional Achievement Awards in WYiting. The competition is conducted by the Narional Council of Teachers of English. Students nominated by their English teachers submitted two samples of writing to a panel of judges. One sample is created over time;the other is an essay on an assigned theme created during a 75-minute period. The judging was carried out by other teachers in Minnesota. Carly has completed her junior year at R.H.S.
