RECOMMENDED ACTION: Motion to Approve the Hiring of Eric Werner for the Chief of
Police Position and Authorize Starting Salary of$105,000/year
ISSUE
On August 6`", the City Council interviewed 3 excellent candidates and has selected its top choice for the
Chief of Police position. Eric Werner has successfully completed all of the required background and pre-
employment requirements and also has agreed to the terms of our offer of employment. Pending City
Council's approval,Mr.Werner will begin employment on September 14 and be formally sworn in at the
September 18�' Council meeting.
Mr. Werner has 24 years of progressive experience in the law enforcement field. He has been with the
City of Burnsville for 13 years and has been a Captain there for the past 8 years.
In addition,Mr.Werner holds a Bachelor of AYts degree in Organizational Management from Concordia
University and a Master of Arts degree in Police Leadership and Administration from the University of St.
Thomas. He has also attended both the FBI National Academy and Northwestern University's School of
Police Staff and Command.
SUMMARY
It is requested that Council approve the hiring of Eric Werner for the Chief of Police position and
authorize a starting salary of$105,000/year.
