ISSUE
One of the City Council goals for 2012/2013 was to make improvements to the Erickson Park Shelter
building. The building was constructed in the early 1980's and includes restrooms, a concession stand and a
small mechanical area that also serves as a work space for league and tournament coordinators. There is also
a small shed next to the building that was added several years ago to provide additional storage on-site. The
building is structurally sound and is used on a regular basis. There were fourteen weekend tournaments at
Erickson Park this year. The City also coordinates adult softball leagues there on Monday,Tuesday,
Thursday and Friday nights. RAAA youth traveling baseball uses the site on Wednesday nights.
The building does not meet a number of current ADA standards simply due to the time frame when it was
built. The concession stand also is most likely in need of upgrades to meet current health department
standards. A majority of the concession stand equipment (refrigerator and freezer) will need to be replaced
in the next year or two. The City does not currently sell concessions from the building but a number of the
facility renters do sell concessions.
Staff would like to discuss with the City Council what types of improvements they would like to see at the
 ryP P y
shelter. Cosmetic type improvements would be inexpensive and would most likely not trigger building
code required improvements. Structural improvements such as remodeling the restrooms would have an
increased cost and would trigger upgrades required by the building code.
