RECOMMENDED ACTION: Consider whether to change the size of the Planning
Commission or advertise for vacancies
BACKGROUND
Earlier this year,Planning Commissioner Val Ege resigned. On November 6`h, Planning Commissioner
Vanessa Demuth was elected to the City Council which will leave another vacancy in the Planning
Commission after January 1S`
At the September 12th work session, the Council reviewed several options for the Planning Commission
vacancies including the possibility of reducing the size of the Commission to five members as it was
several years ago.
CONCLUSION
The Council should make a final determination on whether we should advertise for new Planning
Commissioners or direct staff to prepare an ordinance reducing the Planning Commission size to five
members.

DISCUSSION
Due to the resignation of Val Ege,the Planning Commission has a vacancy for a term ending March 31,
2013. Staff is requesting that the City Council determine how to proceed with the vacancy. Options
include the following:
• Re-interview or select from the four candidates on file;
• Recruit for the vacancy and hold interviews;
• Appoint a commissioner after regular recruitment in January; or
• Pending results of November 6`h election, change back to a five member Planning Commission
if Commissioner DeMuth is elected to the Council.
Listed below are the current commissioners along with the term end dates:

Recruitment of all commissions was held earlier this year. Of the applications still on file, four applicants
specifically mentioned interest in serving on the Planning Commission. The applicants include Marvin
Turner,Terrance Yourchuck, Denise Bednar and Paul Finkenhoefer.
