Resolution approving City co-sponsorship of OneRosemount events and programsROSEMOUNTEXECUTIVE SUMMARY CITY COUNCIL City Council Regular Meeting: February 5, 2013 AGENDA ITEM: Resolution approving City co- sponsorship of OneRosemount events GENDA SECTION: and programs Q PREPARED BY: Dwight Johnson, City Administrator AGENDA NO. ATTACHMENTS: OneRosemount Feeding Families APPROVED BY: brochure RECOMMENDED ACTION: Motion to Adopt a Resolution Supporting the Co- Sponsorship of OneRosemount Events and Programs BACKGROUND For nearly five years, a group of Community Leaders has been meeting to primarily discuss youth related issues in the community. It was originally formed through the efforts of Pastor Bill Goodwin following the tragic death of a local youth in the Spring of 2008. The group includes local pastors, school principals, Community Education staff, the library director, RAAA, RAAC, YMCA, 360 Communities staff, Chamber of Commerce, City staff, and the Mayor who presides over the meetings. Over the past year, the group has divided into several smaller groups to study particular issues of interest. Three current subjects are (1) establishing community resource connections; (2) fostering job mentorship and job shadowing opportunities; and (3) consideration of a youth /teen center. More recently, the group has named itself OneRosemount to reflect its emphasis on strengthening community assets and has also supported a special project called OneRosemount Feeding Children. This is an ambitious project to ask residents and businesses throughout the community to come together on one day, March 2 °d, to box food primarily for Haitian refugees in that country who fled the earthquake disaster in Haiti. Both Rosemount Elementary School and the Middle School have approved space for this event. Fund raising and sign -ups are now underway through the web site onerosemountfeedingfamilies.com. DISCUSSION Tom Meaden, co -chair of the event, will be present at this meeting to ask the Council to consider officially supporting the OneRosemount Feeding Families event so that it can be advertised through the City's website and other communications channels. The Council has had a continuing goal over the past several years to partner with community organizations and to encourage community -based special events. Currently, the City partners with Leprechaun Days, Haunted Trails, Rosemount Area Arts Council and Rosemount Beyond the Yellow Ribbon through agreements, contracts or Council resolution. In anticipation that OneRosemount group may have future projects that we may wish to support, a resolution has been drawn up to support the co- sponsorship of OneRosemount programs generally which includes, but is not limited to the upcoming OneRosemount Feeding Families event. RECOMMENDATION Staff recommends adoption of the attached resolution supporting the co- sponsorship of OneRosemount events and programs. Since we last spoke to you, as you can imagine, a tremendous amount of work has occurred and the event is fast approaching. The website is fully functional, donations are coming in and we are getting tremendous interest from people interested in helping out. With over 300 people now signed up to help out, we are well on our way to the 1200 volunteers that we are looking for. Our organizational and informational meetings have been well attended and the interest and excitement is building in monumental increments. The interest of the City Groups, Churches, Schools and support of the local papers and their support is truly making this a One Rosemount Event, one we believe we can all be most proud of. We are well on our way to making this the third event our City will be known for, along with Leprechaun Days and the Haunted Trail. We are requesting that the City Council consider partnering with us to get the word out and adding the One Rosemount Feeding Families link to the Special Events Icon, under Community Celebrations on the City website. We would like to ensure that everyone gets the message and has an opportunity to help out in any way they can, whether it be in person, sponsoring a box of food or anything else. We feel it is important and another great way to get the message out. We thank you in advance for your consideration of this request and look forward to hearing from you and adding this to the City webpage.
