Business UpdatesR()ISEMOUNT EXECUTIVE SUMMARY PORT AUTHORITY Port Authority Date: July 16, 2013 AGENDA ITEM: Business Updates AGENDA SECTION: New Business PREPARED BY: Kim Lindquist, Deputy Director AGENDA NO. 5.c. ATTACHMENTS: Memo from Clarissa Hadler, Summer APPROVED BY: Intern, New Business Listing RECOMMENDATION: Information Only. ISSUE Here are various business updates: The Building Division received a building permit application for Jimmy Johns to be located in the Rosemount Village Center. With construction of the new frontage road, 149th Street, it appears SA has renewed interest in the site. The gas station received site plan and conditional use permit approval in November 2012 for the property at the NE corner of Business Pkwy and County Road 42. The road and utility project is anticipated to be substantially complete by early August. There are four buildings for sale in the Rosemount Business Park. Three of the buildings are vacant with the fourth, the PCE building for sale but continues to have a long -term tenant. Staff contacted the three brokers representing the three for -sale buildings. They all indicated that there has been limited activity but people are not making commitments as yet. Two brokers indicated they expect more activity as the Tier I and Tier II buildings start to fill up. The application of approval of the Fairview Clinic expansion was received and scheduled for Planning Commission review on July 23, 2013. The expansion includes a pharmacy plus drive -thru and 8 new exam rooms for a total approximate size of 4,600. Also included is a brief summary of the "drop -in" visits our summer intern, Clarissa Hadler, conducted last week at the newer businesses in town. Also included is the list of new businesses. Drop -in Business Visits Clarissa Hadler —Summer Intern Goal: Drop off Open to Business brochure. New Businesses Since 2011 (according to list) 31 Downtown (left for Port Authority visits) _ 14 Permanently Closed _ 4 Attempted Visits _ 13 Spoke with Manager 2 Dropped Info & Spoke Briefly w/ Receptionist / 3 Other Employee ......... _ Not Open Businesses with 8 /Sporadic Hours 4 Feedback: • "Thanks for stopping by." • "We will potentially give this info to commercial clients." (Bank re: Open For Business) • "New location, but been in business for 7 or 8 years." (State Farm — Jason Laube, Receptionist) • "We need more varied stores, like shoes." (MGM, Store Manager) Impressions: • People seemed to appreciate that we made the effort to stop by. • Some seemed a little confused by the visit. • It was difficult to get ahold of business owners or managers. • Feedback was limited. Costs: • 2 hours to hand - deliver to 5 locations. @ $10/ hour= $20 or $4 per location Summary & Recommendations: Overall, people were friendly and welcoming. However, there wasn't a significant amount of interest beyond that. A way to more effectively promote the program might be to target those businesses who regularly have contact with people in the early stages of business start-up; like commercial lenders / bankers, insurance agents, landlords, accountants, and lawyers. If we inform them about the program and give them brochures in a display stand, they might in turn refer their clients.
