RECOMMENDED ACTION: Consider alternatives for recognition events and provide
direction to staff
Background.
Early in 2013, Mayor Droste inquired about alternative ideas for the recognition events held
for City volunteers and commissioners. At that time, planning was too far along to consider
significant changes, but staff made a note to bring the issue back in a timely manner for
2014.
Currently, we have two separate events. Volunteers are recognized at a regular Council
meeting while Commissioners are recognized at a separate dinner in the Community Center
Banquet Room.
Discussion.
The volunteer recognition at the council meeting tends to be rather crowded, with standing
room only being the norm. The commissioner's dinner seems to have variable success with
attendance and strikes some as being excessively formal. In both cases, we have been
doing the same thing for a number of years and some change may refresh both events.
One option that I believe Mayor Droste may have suggested early in the year was to consider
combining the events into a single "pizza party" type of event at the Steeple Center. This
would provide more than a certificate to the volunteers, but also be a less formal event than
the Community Center dinner that we have had for commissioners. It would also presumably
allow more social interaction with its informal atmosphere.
There may be other options to consider including other types of events, other times of the
day, or the scope of who we are trying to recognize (are we missing any groups).
Recommendation.
The Council should consider whether it wants to make any changes to the current recognition
practices. Staff generally supports looking into alternatives.
