Resolution Supporting MOVE MN Campaign 4ROSEN4OUNT EXECUTIVE SUMMARY CITY COUNCIL City Council Regular Meeting: December 17, 2013 AGENDA ITEM: Resolution Supporting MOVE MN Campaign G t C5 PREPARED BY: Dwight Johnson, City Administrator AGENDA NO. g ATTACHMENTS: Resolution APPROVED BY: at)) RECOMMENDED ACTION: Motion to approve the attached resolution supporting the MOVE MN Campaign BACKGROUND: Mayor Droste presented information from a recent Regional Mayors meeting he attended regarding the MOVE MN Campaign during Council discussion of legislative priorities at the December 11th Council work session. The Council agreed that the proposed resolution should be brought forward to this regular meeting for formal consideration. DISCUSSION: The MOVE MN resolution calls for a statewide comprehensive transportation funding package which is balanced for all modes of transportation including highways, transit, bicycles, and pedestrians. As cars get more efficient in gasoline consumption, the current funding from the gas tax is not keeping up with projected needs. The MOVE MN campaign seeks a dedicated source of funding for transportation that will provide a sustainable and predictable revenue source for years to come. The resolution specifically ties transportation funding with the long term economic vitality of the state. No specific legislation is being endorsed by this resolution; it is more of a general policy statement. RECOMMENDATION: :It is recommended that the City Council approve the attached resolution supporting the MOVE MN Campaign. CITY OF ROSEMOUNT DAKOTA COUNTY, MINNESOTA RESOLUTION 2013- A RESOLUTION FOR SUPPORT OF THE MOVE MN CAMPAIGN WHEREAS, the City of Rosemount supports efforts for a new state-wide comprehensive transportation funding package to address Minnesota's $50 billion transportation deficit; and WHEREAS, the City of Rosemount agrees that transportation investments provide benefits beyond new infrastructure, but also create jobs, build economic competiveness, and improve the quality of life for all Minnesotans by enabling the state to properly maintain and improve transportation access that expand access and opportunity for all; and WHEREAS, the City of Rosemount affirms that to be effective, the new state-wide transportation funding package must be: • Comprehensive,including funding for roads,highways, transit, bicycle and pedestrian facilities throughout Minnesota. • Balanced across transportation modes and between Greater Minnesota and the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area, serving all Minnesotans equitably. • Sustainable,including long-term solutions that will grow the economy to meet the states growing transportation needs. • Dedicated to transportation. NOW,THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED,by the City Council of the City of Rosemount, Minnesota, that the City of Rosemount hereby supports the Move MN Campaign.
