PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION
Parks and Recreation Commission Regular Meeting: April 28, 2014
ISSUE
Staff would like to discuss the naming of several City parks including the baseball/softball complex built at
UMore and two neighborhood parks that will soon be built
The City Council recently discussed the naming of the UMore Ball fields and wondered if the Commission
had any additional ideas. The Parks and Recreation Commission recommended that the park be named
Akron Fields. The Commission suggested the following names for the UMore ball fields: Holiday Park
for John "Doc" Holiday former Assistant Principal at RHS, O'Leary Park after former police officer Jim
O'Leary who passed away in 2012, Hanson Park for a past school superintendent, Arms Park for the
munitions plant, 100 Farms Park for the farms relocated for the arms plant, Ryan Park for a lawyer who
represented the farmers and later who became a chief justice on the Minnesota supreme court, GOP for
Gopher Ordnance Park, and Akron Fields for the street it is located on.
Included in the packet is a list of additional naming ideas to be discussed.
We also have two new developments that will have public parks located within them. The Prestwick
Development (see the attached map) has two neighborhoods being developed within the subdivision. On
the north side of Connemara is Prestwick and on the south side of Connemara is Falmor Glen. Right now
staff refers to the park area in the Prestwick Development as Prestwick Park.
In the Bella Vista Development (see the attached map), there will also be a public park that is next to
Horseshoe Lake. Currently staff refers to the park area as Horseshoe Park.
Staff would like to discuss naming of the parks at the meeting on Monday and will assist the Commission
with recommendations at the meeting.
