Amazing Race - On Saturday, May 3, the SORR communities of Apple Valley, Burnsville, Eagan, Farmington, Lakeville, Rosemount and Savage hosted the 9th Annual SORR GPS Amazing Family Race. Thirty-two teams took part in this year's adventure which took them on a whirlwind tour of Farmington, Rosemount, Apple Valley and Burnsville. Once teams found the location, they had to complete a fun task to obtain a sticker to move on to the next GPS location. There were a total of eight checkpoints which included challenges such as stacking cups in a tower, petting a dog at Pet Co. and ringing the ski school bell at Buck Hill. The teams ended the race with a pizza lunch and award ceremony. Garden Plots - In spite of the wet spring weather, we were able to get the garden plots tilled again and ready for planting. All of the plots have been laid out and the gardeners have started planting. Once again this year we have 49 plots scattered among five park sites. All plots were rented shortly after they were made available, and we have 15 names on the waiting list. The hockey rinks that had been in Central Park were removed to provide room for the splash bad which is being built in the area where the east rink had been. So far, the site has been graded, the water service to the splash pad and the storm sewer from the splash pad area have been installed, utility conduits have been installed, the new path has been roughed in, and certain footings have been poured. On Wednesday, May 14, the first section of the concrete pad and the floor of the picnic shelter building were poured and work began on the boulder wall around the splash pad. In recent weeks, the splash pad equipment has been installed and the concrete pad is expected to be poured during the week of June 23`d. We are optimistic that the project will be completed by early July. Tennis Block Party - The Parks and Recreation Department hosted the annual Tennis Block Party on Saturday, May 17 at the Rosemount High School courts. It was a beautiful day, and approximately 75 people attended the event. The Block Party is a collaboration of groups offering tennis opportunities in Rosemount. We work together to offer the best possible community programming, without duplicating services. The collaborators include the Rosemount Area Athletic Association (RAAA) youth traveling and in-house tennis programs, Rosemount High School tennis boosters promoting their program along with summer camps/tournaments, and the City of Rosemount Parks and Recreation Department offering youth LISTA QuickStart programs and adult lessons throughout the summer. Spring Clean Up - The annual Spring Clean -Up Day was held on Saturday, May 17 at Dakota County Technical College. We serviced 320 cars on Saturday morning. This is more than in the last two spring events: 75 more than last year and 28 more than in 2012. In fact, in the six years since the recession hit in 2008 our average for the spring event has been 305 vehicles, so we topped that. DNR Stocking of Schwarz Pond - On Tuesday, May 20, the MN DNR put 89 pounds of bluegill into Schwarz Pond. This equates to 1,335 fish. There should be plenty of fish for the fishing derby in July. The DNR willreturn in the fall to recapture any bluegills that are left and place them in lakes with aeration systems for the winter. Erickson Park Tennis Courts - Work began on the Erickson Park tennis courts on Monday, May 19. It is expected that the four new tennis courts at Erickson Park will be ready for use by late July.
