ISSUE The time has come for the City Council to once again consider applying for our recertification as a distinguished Tree City, USA, Tree City,USA is an award given to those cities that depict an honest and active program to promote protection of our natural habitat and our trees. Part of the attachment includes a work plan and a proclamation by the City of Rosemount identifying May 3,2014 to be Arbor Day and the month of May to be Arbor Month. City staff worked to complete a variety of programs including an Arbor Day program and tree give away,tree plantings and other nature programs. This application for recertification indicates that we would like to continue with these types of programs and others to promote tree planting and protection. It is the Parks and Recreation Department's intent to join with the Commissions, Council and other Departments to further enhance our policies relating to the preservation of our trees and to continue to reforest the City. BACKGROUND Each year the Ciry applies for recertification as a distinguished Tree City,USA,and proclaims the month of May to be Arbor Month and a specif ic day in May to be Arbor Day. The City along with Dalcota Electric Association purchased 180 bare root trees that ranged from 5' to 14' in height and up to 1" in diameter and were handed out to Rosemount residents. The Mayor of Rosemount read the Arbor Day Proclamation. The City Council along with a local Boy Scout pack commemorated the day by planting a Hacicberry Tree. The City's Arbor Day Celebration once again well received by the residents and plans are in the works to continue this type of celebration for 2015. In 2012, the City of Rosemount was awarded a Community Forest Bonding Grant from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. The amount ofthe grant is $20,725 and its objective is to add diversity to the tree cover on public property in anticipation of losing ash trees to Emerald Ash Borer. In 2014 the planting was completed. 2014 was a busy year for the City of Rosemount in regards to tree planting and removals. We planted 105 trees in parks, 12 trees in boulevards, 80 trees in our nursery and 180 trees from Arbor Day. Unfortunately we also had to remove 114 trees for various reasons. Along with the above mentioned special projects, City staff also continued with the maintenance of boulevard trees, which included trimming, pruning, watering and inulching over 900 trees.
