Swing Dance Event Foster advised that the Swing Dance event is scheduled for Friday,March 20 at 7:00 in Rosemount Community Center. The Youth Commission agreed to partner with RAAC on this event and is requesting volunteers. Commissioner Corrigan plans on volunteering and several other I i commissioners indicated they might be able to attend. Shoe-Corrigan stated that if the Youth Commission has agreed to partner with RAAC then they should try to set the date aside to help out. NEW BUSINESS 6.a. Volunteer Coordinator Presentation Diane Erickson provided background on the collaborative volunteer project with Rosemount and three neighboring cities. Volunteers can apply through the city's website. Part of Erickson's responsibility has been to determine the city's needs and fitting a volunteer into that role. Volunteers are working on various projects such as scanning, grant writing and even building nesting houses for endangered birds. Commissioner Dennis inquired whether any youth were involved in the volunteer program. Erickson advised that the majority of youth volunteers are with Park& Rec but that could change in the summer when youth are more available. Parks & Recreation Director Schultz would be the person to contact if anyone is volunteering in his department and Erickson would be the secondary contact. Most of the information comes through Erickson and she forwards to the appropriate department head. Groups could be formed to perform such tasks as pulling weeds and watering. Commissioners were asked to provide input about potential youth volunteer opportunities. Dennis said that members of National Honor Society need to complete 12 volunteer hours per trimester. DeMuth suggested a local dog shelter. Dennis suggested partnering with schools to assist patrols for elementary kids with crossing busy intersections. Erickson said she is currently working on a group for traffic control for events or for busy intersections. Shoe-Corrigan suggested that the Police Chief be contacted about a volunteer partnership with the youth commissioners or other students to hel atrols in the areas of 145`'' and Shannon Parkway. ,AOFoster outlined the procedure for submitting a volunteer application on the City's website. There was a discussion about the Youth Commission sponsoring a 5K run sometime in the future. It was suggested that anyone interested in this should contact another 5K run organizer about volunteering at another 5K run so they can experience what goes on in running an event start to finish. Another potential idea would be to partner with another group to work on a run together. Erickson suggested that youth commissioners contact her if they want to assist with the bird house building project. She added that the commissioners should be realistic about how many hours they can volunteer so they are able to follow through on their commitment. Erickson will come back in about six months to provide an update on the volunteer program. 6.b. Roundtable Discussion Dennis is going to Jamaica for spring break. Schalliol and DeMuth hope all have a safe and fun spring break. Yambing and Munson will be in France over spring break. Wuellner is training at Wendy's to be a store manager.
