Goals and Leadership Development The Youth Commissioners broke out into their small groups to provide an update regarding goals and leadership development. Commissioner Revanur reported that over the past week the group accomplished their short term goal of promoting the One Tile One Rosemount project and the Youth Commission in general to the middle schoolers. Revanur added that the One Tile One Rosemount event was well attended at the high school. Commissioner Munson advised that their group would provide an update next month as Wuellner had the group’s information and was absent from the meeting. Commissioner Dennis reported that his group is putting together a resume class and has confirmed with Mr. Macho at the high school that he is interested in teaching this class in the spring. Dennis 1 recommended that a subcommittee be assembled to work out the details of this class once the Tree Lighting Event has occurred. 7b. Tree Lighting Update Schwartz advised the Tree Lighting Event is scheduled for Friday December 5 at the Community Center and RAAC is requesting the Youth Commissioners to volunteer. There are four volunteers needed to hand out cookies and cider from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Commissioners Hinderaker, Dennis, Revanur and Demuth agreed to volunteer. RAAC would like 8-10 band musicians to perform a few Christmas songs outside at the event. Volunteers to lead songs are also needed. Shoe-Corrigan inquired whether the Victorian ensemble outfits were still an option for this year and Commissioner Wick will look into it. The contact for choir volunteers will be Wick and for band volunteers will be DeMuth and Schalliol. Schwartz advised that OneTile will also be at the Tree Lighting Event. Loch requested that the Commissioners get the Tree Lighting posters out to as many businesses as possible before Thanksgiving. The event will also be advertised in paper. Loch suggested the schools, businesses and restaurants and Shoe-Corrigan put together a summary of the distribution areas and the Commissioners each signed up for an area. NEW BUSINESS 8.a. Stars Wars Event Loch discussed the Stars Wars Event which was held at the Steeple Center earlier this year. Some st members of 401 Battalion were at the event and 1450 people attended. The 2015 Star Wars Event is scheduled for January 17, 2015 at the Community Center. Loch advised that RAAC needs at least 44 volunteers and are counting on a commitment from the Youth Commission. Loch suggested the Commissioners try to recruit friends to help out at the event and provide an update at the next month’s meeting. Lastly, Loch advised that RAAC is planning another swing dance for next March and he will provide more information on that event at future meetings. 8.b. Roundtable Discussion Dennis reported that he has been shadowing an orthopedic surgeon and he had his presentation last night at Eagan High School to talk about his mentorship. Schalliol and Hindergard talked about upcoming finals. Yambing talked about her experience teaching religion class and the kids giving back to the community by bringing in food donations. DeMuth advised that she is looking forward to the speech season. Munson discussed a church retreat. Revanur advised that she will not be at the next meeting and wished everybody a Merry Christmas. Wick reported that the musical “A Christmas Carol” will begin in December. REPORTS 9.a. Commission Member Reports Schalliol advised that the attendance subcommittee talked to Meaden and Mohamed about their lack of attendance and missed Youth Commission meetings. Meaden advised Schalliol that he wished to resign from the Youth Commission. Mohamed had not made a decision as to how she wished to proceed. Revanur reported that she spoke to Mohamed about this issue and Mohamed hasn’t been able to come due to family issues and other conflicts but has been getting the word out about the Youth Commission. Shoe-Corrigan advised that commissioners need to really consider their obligations and sometimes that may result in having to step away from some commitments. In this case, Mohamed may need to consider stepping down from the Youth Commission but she could still help with volunteering and attend events. Schalliol and Dennis agreed to contact Mohamed about this. Shoe-Corrigan discussed 2 her decision not to run again for City Council and the hard decision she made because of her work, family, and all the other commitments she is juggling. 9.b. Next Meeting Date The next meeting of the Youth Commission is scheduled for December 17, 2014 at 3:45 p.m. at City Hall. ADJOURNMENT There being no further business to discuss, it was moved by Dennis and seconded by Wick that the meeting be adjourned.
