HomeMy WebLinkAbout20120222 YCRM MinutesROSEMOUNT YOUTH COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING PROCEEDINGS FEBRUARY 22, 2012 CALL TO ORDER Pursuant to due call and notice thereof a regular meeting of the Rosemount Youth Commission was held on Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at 3:45 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 2875 1451h Street West, Rosemount. Chairperson Nicole Laumer called the meeting to order with Youth Commissioners Eichten, Olson, Nelson, Hagen, Kutz, and Laumer attending. Councilmember Weisensel and Staff Liaison Emmy Foster were also present. Youth Commissioner Neuens and Alternate Drew were absent. CONSENT AGENDA Motion called to approve the consent agenda. Motion by Laumer. Second by Hagen. Motion to approve the consent agenda. Ayes: 6 Nays: 0 Absent: Neuens. Motion carried. Motion called to approve the minutes of the January 25, 2012 Youth Commission meeting Motion by Laumer. Second by Nelson Ayes: 6 Mays: 0. Absent: Neuens. Motion carried. NEW BUSINESS a. Teen Night Planning Group The Commission met with representatives from the YMCA (Pat Prindle) and the Parks and Recreation Department (Lisa Maurer) to discuss the proposed middle school teen night that is a partnership between area organizations including the YMCA, the City of Rosemount, Lighthouse Church, Community of Hope Church, and the Middle School. Prindle and Maurer shared ideas that the committee has been working on for the event which will be called "Friday Night Live" and discussed that if the event is successful, it may be done on a quarterly basis. The event is being planned for Friday, April 201h from 7 — 9:30 p.m. at the Rosemount Community Center and is intended for students in 6t" — 8t" grades. Commissioners were asked for input on ways to improve attendance and make Teen Night more enjoyable for all involved. They were also invited to help promote the event and possibly help on the day of the event — setting up, cleaning up, monitoring, running concessions, etc. b. Youth Commission Student Survey Following a discussion on how to most effectively distribute the survey, Commissioner Hagen motioned to allow Chairperson Laumer to act on behalf of the Commission in distributing the survey. Laumer will check with the appropriate school staff person to see if the survey can be distributed at the high school. Motion by Hagen. Youth Commission Recruitment Timeline The terms of members of the Youth Commission now last one year, beginning and ending in May. The Commission will soon be seeking new members. Commissioners talked about ways to find students who would be interested in joining the Commission, and when to accept applications. Commissioners are encouraged to recruit new members. Applications are due on April 6 and current members must reapply if they are interested in serving another term. REPORTS Chairperson Laumer talked about her experience of presenting the Youth Commission report to the City Council at their February 6th Council meeting. The next meeting of the Youth Commission is scheduled for March 21, 2012 at 3:45 p.m. in the City Hall Conference Rooms. ADJOURNMENT There being no further business to discuss, it was moved by Chairperson Laumer and seconded by Eichten that the meeting be adjourned.
