Designation of Polling Locations for 2016 Elections EXECUTIVE SUMMARY City Council Regular Meeting: February 1, 2016 AGENDA ITEM: Designation of Polling Places for 2016 Elections AGENDA SECTION: Consent PREPARED BY: Clarissa Hadler, City Clerk AGENDA NO. 6.d. ATTACHMENTS: Draft Resolution APPROVED BY: ddj RECOMMENDED ACTION: Motion to approve the attached resolution designating the seven polling places for the 2016 elections. SUMMARY There are two polling places that need to be relocated this year; Precinct 3 and Precinct 4. Parents and staff at Shannon Park Elementary, the current Precinct 3 polling place, expressed various concerns with the use of the school for elections. The main issue is parking, which becomes very congested during the election between staff, parents and voters. Another issue is the lack of extra space, causing Phys. Ed classes and some after school activities to have to relocate to less than ideal school rooms. Further concerns centered on voters coming in the wrong door and wandering the school, and congestion during drop-off / pick-up with buses and the YMCA program. Staff has spoken with and toured First Baptist Church and School, and feels that the space is conducive for elections. The school is located on the lower level, so the polling place activity should be minimally disruptive to students. Parking is substantial, and staff and parents generally park behind the church in the lower lot, where the main entrance to the school is. Due to the construction at the Steeple Center, Robert Trail Library was used as the Precinct 4 polling place for the 2014 elections. Now that construction is complete, the polling place should be moved back to the Steeple Center due to space limitations at the library. Staff will provide public notification through the City’s website, newsletter, local newspaper and other sources prior to any election. In addition, all voters in Precincts 3 and 4 will receive a direct mailing from Dakota County informing them of their polling location for 2016. RECOMMENDATION Approve the attached Resolution designating the seven polling locations for all 2016 elections. 2 CITY OF ROSEMOUNT DAKOTA COUNTY, MINNESOTA RESOLUTION 2016 - ___ A RESOLUTION APPROVING THE DESIGNATION OF POLLING PLACES FOR 2016 ELECTIONS WHEREAS, the City of Rosemount is divided into seven precincts for the election of four Council Members and one Mayor; and WHEREAS, polling locations need to be designated for each precinct and notice must be sent to all affected voters.
