Dog Parks ROSIVIQ EXECUTIVE SUMMARY PARKS AND RECREATION GOMMISSIOPI Parks and Recreation Commission Meeting: May 23, 2016 AGENDA ITEM: Dog Parks AGENDA SECTION: New Business PREPARED BY: Dan Schultz, Parks and Recreation AGENDA NO. Director 7 a. ATTACHMENTS: Informational Spreadsheet APPROVED BY: RECOMMENDED ACTION: None, discussion only. ISSUE One of the City Council Projects and Initiatives for their 2016-2017 Goa1s is to open a dog paxk for small dogs along walking corridors. Included in the packet is a spreadsheet that contains informa.tion about some other dog parks. Sta,ff would like to discuss with the Commission the topic of dog paxks and possible locations in Rosemount. Staff will provide some possible locations at the meeting on Monda,y. BACKGROUND A dog park is a pa,rk for dogs to exercise and pla.y off-leash in a controlled environment under the supervision of their owners. These parks have varying features, although they typically offer a 4' to 6' fence and separate double-gated entry and et points. Off-leash dog areas,or dog parks, provide a community setting in which people can gathex and socialize and where they can observe the interaction of groups of dogs at pla,y. Dog parks allow owners and theix dogs to spend time togethex and offer dogs a space for play and companionship with other dogs. Some dog parks have separate play spaces for large and small dogs. Others have one large area for dogs of all sizes. There is debate about this issue,as some argue that dogs should be segregated by size, while othexs feel that dogs of all sizes can and should socialize together. In any case, dog owners must make sute their dogs are well-socialized,and watch carefully so that they can intervene if the dog acts anti-socially towards other dogs or humans.
