Z'hxough the cooperation and efforts of the Leprechaun Da-s Committee,-aYious olunteeYs, and cin staff, rec-cling has become an impottant part of annual suinmex eent. Rec-cling and organiccompostable items vere collected at the Run for the Gold. Recycling bins lined the parade route the day of the Leprechaun Days PaYade and a group of volunteers from the 4-Force 4-H Club valked the parade toute collecting rec-clables from parade attendees as the paradevas coming to an end. The Lighthouse Church borrovs recvcling bins from the Cin- and does a great job of rec}-cling at the Lightin' Up Ilock Parn, immediately following the parade. At Midsummer Faire, recycling bins were set throughout the Beex Gaxden and Waste Sta,tions consisting of recycling bins, bins for organics/compostable items, and trash bins that were located throughout the rest of Central Paxk. Master Recyclers fYom the Dakota, County Master Recycler program volunteered to staff these waste stations and to sort through the various bins to make sure that recycla, ble items, composta, ble items, and trash items all ended up in the correct bin. Finally, the morning after the carnival ended, City Staff and several volunteers sorted through all of the trash, recycling, and organic bins used at the event to separate even more of the materia.ls collected the da.y before. After all this effort and sorting,it appears that over 60% of the materia,ls collected during Lepxechaun Days was either xecyclable or compostable and was diverted from being placed in a landfill. Blue Birds -Parks and Recreation Staff have been monitoring sixteen bluebird houses at Schwaxz Pond Park thYoughout the summer. This was a busy yeax in the park and we had successful bluebird nesting in six of these boxes, with approximately 22 bluebird chicks hatched and leaving the nest. This has been a fun and successful program and it demonstrates the importance of allowing some of our park sites to be set aside for the benefit of native pla.nts and animals. We hope to place bluebird nest boxes in more paxks in years to come.
