RECOMMENDED ACTION: Motion to approve the receipt of $400.00 from a grant and
approve expenditure of $400 for Buckle Up and Speak Up traffic safety campaigns.
ISSUE
Teenage drivers often engage in risky driving behavior including not wearing seat belts and texting and
driving.
BACKGROUND
Texting and driving is a serious risk on our roadways. Teenagers seem particularly susceptible to engaging
in risky driving behaviors such as not wearing a seatbelt and driving while texting or otherwise distracted.
Minnesota has utilized a “Buckle Up” campaign for years to promote wearing seat belts. A newer
campaign of “Speak Up” is being used to encourage teens and other drivers to speak up when they are in a
vehicle with someone who is engaged in distracted driving or texting while driving to stop the conduct.
As a means to promote these campaigns “Buckle Up” and “Speak Up” were painted on the road at the
exits of the high school and the middle school. Other handout materials were purchased to bring
additional awareness to the matter.
A grant was sought and received from AAA Auto Club Group to offset the $400.00 in cost for this
campaign.
SUMMARY
Staff recommends that Council approve the receipt of $400.00 and the expenditure of those funds to
promote traffic safety.
