AGEqTA, j ATTACHMENTS: Proposed proclamation for mentoring month APPROVED BY: I 0 RECOMMENDED ACTION: Council approval of proclamation ACTION: Various studies have shown that a key way to ensure the well -being and development of young people is to offer an opportunity to be mentored by a caring adult. A positive role model can make a difference for children whose parents need extra assistance to teach life skills in their families. By one estimate, nearly a half million children in Minnesota would benefit from some form of mentoring. A volunteer group, Kids N Kinship, has worked for 32 years in Rosemount and nearby communities to match children with willing mentors. Currently more than 100 adults are serving, but 69 children are still on a waiting list. The attached proclamation recognizes the month of January as "National Mentoring Month," to honor the volunteers who give their time to the benefit of young people and to encourage others to do the same. As the proposed proclamation indicates, "Young people who have mentors have a better chance of succeeding and are more likely to make positive choices. Research shows volunteer mentors can play a powerful role in reducing risky adolescent behaviors such as drug and alcohol abuse and youth violence, while greatly enhancing a young person's prospects for leading a healthy and productive life." The children who benefit will be involved in the observance next Tuesday in "Thank Your Mentor Day."
