RECOMMENDED ACTION: Consider options for the council meeting calendar for 2017.
BACKGROUND
Recently, Mayor Droste suggested that council members be asked whether or not any changes to the
council meeting schedule should be considered. The results are shown in the attached table.
DISCUSSION
Four council members appear to be open to Option 2 (Tuesday/Tuesday/Tuesday) while three also
endorsed Option 1, the current schedule (Tuesday/Monday/Tuesday). Jeff Weisensel offered an
additional Monday/Monday/Monday option.
Staff discussed this issue recently and offered the following observations regarding any change to a
predominately Monday schedule: (1) There are a number of Monday holidays occurring on the first or
third Mondays during the year including New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Day, President’s Day, and
Labor Day in 2017. (2) There would be conflict for our Cable TV crews because Farmington meets on
Mondays. (3) Staff assumes that there would be no change in the current packet preparation schedule
which calls for electronic delivery by Friday afternoon of the preceding week. If so, this would result in
one less day for Council review of packet items, ask questions, etc. (4). The Utilities Commission and Port
Authority would need to change their meeting dates if a Monday scheduled is adopted. (5). The City
Attorney has had some conflicts with past Monday meetings.
RECOMMENDATION
Options 1 and 2, both of which have regular meeting on Tuesdays, do not create any of the issues noted
above. The council should choose the option that best meets its own needs as well as those of the public.
