Commendation for 50 years of Service as Election Judge EXECUTIVE SUMMARY City Council Regular Meeting: December 20, 2016 AGENDA ITEM: Commendation for 50 years of Service as Election Judge AGENDA SECTION: Presentations PREPARED BY: Clarissa Hadler, City Clerk AGENDA NO. 3.a. ATTACHMENTS: None APPROVED BY: ddj RECOMMENDED ACTION: Present certificate of commendation to Arlene Casey. SUMMARY It was brought to our attention that this year is the 50 year anniversary of Arlene Casey serving as an Election Judge, and we wish to recognize this as the momentous occasion that it is. Arlene began serving in 1966 at the age of 35 with the gubernatorial election of Harold LeVander. She lived and served in Burnsville for 24 years, where she raised her family. She moved here to Rosemount 13 years ago and has served as an election judge in each election since. Arlene has served in the elections of our last 8 governors and 7 presidents in 26 general elections, as well as many primaries. When asked about the things she remembers most, she recalled the days of separate colored ballots for each office and counting those by hand until 3 a.m. She also recalled the time that a small polling place in Burnsville had a line so long at 8 pm when polls closed that they did not finish voting until 10 pm. We congratulate Arlene for her dedication to the important role of election judge; whose job it is to provide fair, accurate, and accessible elections, thereby playing a critical role in the democratic process.
