RECOMMENDED ACTION: Motion to accept an $8,075.00 donation from Flint Hills and to
approve the expenditure of funds from the Rosemount Fire Department donation account to
purchase a Ram Air Turnout Gear Dryer and Two ALT4 Gas Monitors
SUMMARY
The council is asked to consider the expenditure of $7,919.12 from the donation account for
the purchase of a Ram Air Turnout Gear Dryer and two ALT4 gas monitors. The purchase of
the gear dryer will allow the drying of turnout gear after washing in a matter of a couple of
hours. The 4-gas monitors will be placed in each of the officer’s vehicles and they will be
utilized to detect hazardous environments in residences including carbon monoxide.
The money for these purchases was made possible from a donation by Flint Hills. This
donation was made to the Fire Department in December of 2016, specifically to be used for
the purchase of this gear dryer and the two 4-gas monitors. The attached quote is an invoice
for the Ram Air Gear Dryer from Jefferson Fire Safety that is off of the state bid price. It
should be noted that the quote is for two gear dryers, we are only purchasing one at this time.
The other quote is from Emergency Response Solutions for the 4-gas monitors.
Cancer is the leading cause of firefighter deaths in the United States and cancer diagnoses
are increasing each and every year. One of the leading causes of cancer in firefighters is
wearing dirty gear after fires without properly cleaning it. The International Association of Fire
Fighters Line of Duty Death statistics show that by the age of 60, twice as many firefighters
die from cancer than cardiac arrest.
The purchase of this gear dryer will encourage firefighters to wash their gear more often as
the drying time is drastically reduced. Instead of taking days to dry, the gear will dry in a
matter of hours thus putting the gear back in service much quicker.
The purchase of the 4-gas monitors will be for the replacement of one monitor that is no
longer functional and adding one monitor to an officer vehicle. These 4-gas monitors are
often the first detection tool used at a scene before other fire vehicles arrive. They most often
are used for the detection of carbon monoxide and other hazardous gases present during
emergency calls at fire scenes.
