ISSUE:
The Parks and Recreation Commission recently reviewed a plan to expand the skate park at
Schwarz Pond Park The Commission has recommended the City Council approve spending
funds from the park improvement fund to purchase the equipment and have it installed
BACKGROUND
In August of 2004, the skate park was relocated from Central Park to Schwarz Pond Park
The skate park has continued to see the same steady use as when it was located at Central
Park The Parks and Recreation Department recently held a meeting to discuss the
operations of the new location of the skate park and get feedback from the users who have
been inquiring about additional equipment The meeting drew approximately twelve youth
and two parents Design consultants from Skate Wave were on hand to assist the skate park
users in reviewing possible new equipment layouts and to discuss new features
SUMMARY
The skate park users would like to see additional tier 1 equipment (no taller than 4 feet) One
of the parents was concerned about not having lights or a phone on site The skate park
users redesigned the skate park and added equipment that would cost $40,223 to purchase
and $5,010 to install The area where the skate park was moved to at Schwarz Pond Park
does include ample area for expansion and could accommodate the proposed equipment
Staff recommends the City Council approve the expenditure of the $45,233 for the purchase
and installation of skate park equipment through the Minnesota Regional Service Agency
Purchasing Co -op
