CITY COUNCIL
City Council Regular Meeting May 16, 2006
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The Rosemount Public Works Department is a team of 20 people dedicated to maintaining a safe, clean,
and enjoyable environment for all residents and businesses. The team's mission is to enhance the quality
of life through responsive, efficient, and cost effective delivery of services consistent with community
values.
The Department consists of an operations superintendent, a Public Works supervisor, 15 full -time
maintenance workers, two mechanics, and a custodian. They are busy throughout the year maintaining
100 miles of streets, 65 miles of sidewalks and bike trails, and 270 acres in 23 parks throughout the City.
The most visible activities include street sweeping, hydrant flushing, mowing, and plowmg /sanding streets.
Behind the scenes, personnel maintain more than 200 pieces of equipment, 61 City vehicles, and 23 heavy
machines including street sweepers, tractors, loaders, utility trucks, snowblowers, and lawnmowers.
Efficient and cost effective fleet management is the backbone of the Department, keeping the vehicles and
equipment in peak condition.
Another behind -the- scenes activity is the ongoing maintenance of the underground infrastructure system,
including 100 miles of watermam, 80 miles of sanitary sewer, and 70 miles of storm sewer. Crews spend
much of the summer cleaning the sanitary and storm sewer systems in order to prevent costly backups and
overflows. Crews also ensure proper functioning of the water supply and distribution system, which
includes seven wells three (and soon to be four) towers, and nearly 1,000 hydrants. Residents this summer
will receive an annual report assuring them that our regular water testing and sampling yields safe, clean
drinking water for all residents.
These are the activities that residents take for granted, but that our employees can never take for granted.
In recognition of the commitment of our City government to maintain a safe and efficient infrastructure
for a growing community, the City Council is asked to loin in the designation of next week as National
Public Safety Week. The national theme of this observance is carried out everyday m Rosemount: "Public
Works: The Heart of Every Community."
