Comendation for Girl Scout Gold Award WinnersAGENDA ITEM: Commendation for Girl Scout Gold Award winners AGENDA SECTION: Department head reports PREPARED BY: William H Droste, Mayor AGENDA NO. 5b ATTACHMENTS: APPROVED BY: a RECOMMENDED ACTION: Presentation of certificates 4 ROSEMOLINT CITY COUNCIL City Council Regular Meeting: June 20, 2006 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Rosemount City Council endorses the activity of scouting programs in our community to promote the spurt of volunteerism among residents. The Council seeks to commend individual scouts who have reached a high level of achievement m their programs. The Gold Award is described as the highest award in Girl Scouting This prestigious national award is available to Girl Scouts in grades 11 and 12. To achieve it, girls must complete extensive prerequisite activities in the areas of leadership, skill development, and career exploration. They must also plan and implement a leadership project involving a muumum 65 hours of community service over four months. This year, three students from Rosemount have achieved the Gold Award: Lindsey Jobin Deborah Massey Kelsey Weisensel The Girl Scout Council of St. Croix Valley described the trio's a ork: As part of a project to support individuals with cancer, Lindsey, Deborah, and Kelsey created "Care Caps for Courageous Kids They learned, as well as recruited others to knit caps for cancer patients They also collected more than 300 caps, which they donated to Children's Hospital and the Virginia Piper Cancer Institute at Abbott Northwestern Hospital. In addition, they promoted and collected hair donations for the Locks of Love program. To further their fight against cancer, they served on the pubhcity committee and were team captains for the Relay for Life in Rosemount Their efforts directly increased team participation by 340 percent, as well as participant donations by 375 percent from the previous year. Their scout leaders are Lisa Jobin and Kathy Weisensel. All three young women expected to attend the Council meeting to receive commendations and thanks from the City.
