EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
For the sixth year, community leaders across the nation are identifying the month of January as National
Mentoring Month. The observance is an attempt to recognize the contributions of those who serve as
mentors, and to bung attention to the need for additional mentors m all communities.
The organization Kids `n Kinship facilitates mentoring m Dakota County. The organization says it has
111 volunteers matched with 84 children in the county. Eight children in Rosemount are being mentored.
There are 75 children in the area who would like to benefit from the help of a mentor but have not yet had
a volunteer to serve them. Ten of those children who are waiting hve in Rosemount.
Kids `n Kinship will offer orientation sessions for new volunteers who would like to become involved,
serving the organization's mission to provide friendships to children ages 5 -16 who are in need of a
positive role model. The next orientation sessions are next Tuesday, January 9, and later on January 25.

During the month, organizations like Kids `n Kinship are celebrating the positive Impact of mentoring
both on the children who are served and on the adults who volunteer to serve them. Those groups will
mark Thursday, January 25, as "Thank You Mentor Day."
A suggested proclamation is attached for Council consideration to declare January as National Mentoring
Month in Rosemount.
Proclamation
WHEREAS: Young people who have mentors have a better chance of
succeeding and are more likely to make positive choices.
WHEREAS: Research shows volunteer mentors can play a powerful role in
reducing risky adolescent behaviors such as drug and alcohol abuse and youth
violence, while greatly enhancing a young person's prospects for leading a
health and productive life.
WHEREAS: In Minnesota, there are an estimated 450,000 young people who
could benefit from an adult mentor.
WHEREAS: With the support of businesses, communities, and caring adults,
we can help introduce a child to new ideas and opportunities through
mentoring.
THEREFORE, in the great city of Rosemount, which celebrates the
hundreds of adult mentors already volunteering, and in our determined efforts
to recruit new mentors, we proclaim January 2007 as National Mentoring
Month.
