The department is lead by the Director of Public Works /City Engineer, Andy Brotzler. Their mission is to enhance the quality of life through responsive, efficient, and cost effective delivery of services consistent with community values. The Operations Superintendent and Public Works Supervisor lead a team of 17 maintenance workers, with 4 others providing engineering, technical, and administrative support for the department. The maintenance staff is busy throughout the year maintaining 103 miles of streets, 86 miles of sidewalks and bike trails, and 360 acres in 24 parks throughout the City. The most visible activities include street sweeping, hydrant flushing, mowing, park maintenance and snowplowing. Behind the scenes, our mechanics maintain more than 200 pieces of equipment, 61 City vehicles, and 23 heavy machines including street sweepers, tractors, loaders, utility trucks, snow blowers, and large mowers. Another important activity is the ongoing maintenance of the utility infrastructure system, including 109 miles of watermain, 70 miles of sanitary sewer, and 84 miles of storm sewer. Crews also ensure proper functioning of the water supply and distribution system, which includes 8 wells, 4 towers, and more than 1,300 hydrants. Residents receive an annual report assuring them that our water production and testing of the water yields safe, clean drinking water for all residents. In addition to these regular activities, we would like to highlight the extraordinary efforts of the crew this past winter. With a close -to- record breaking snowfall of 86.6 inches beginning November 13 and continuing through March 23, crews completed 13 full plow operations, with many of the operations being multi -day events. Forty-five percent of the plowing days fell on weekends and holidays. The dedication and personal sacrifices of the crews to maintain a high level of service under difficult conditions for the community is greatly appreciated.
