Proposal APPROVED BY: RECOMMENDED ACTION: Adcept Grant The City has been notified that the grant application for the Taco John's "Do You Have a Good Idea ?" has been chosen as one of ten funded projects out of 438 submittals. The sponsors of the grant application, Todd Harapat, Manager and Brenda Wood, Crew Leader from Taco John's in Rosemount will be in attendance at the July 6, 2010 meeting. The grant application is to provide $2000 for purchase of books associated with the One Book, One Rosemount event that will take place in October 2010. The book purchase will allow residents an opportunity to access the book; for those who cannot afford to purchase the book or who are unable to reserve the limited`copies on hand at the local library. While the main focus of the event is community reading of the book, other activities are being planned around the books theme. Community Program Submitted By: City of Rosemount — Parks and Recreation Department Do You Have a Good Idea ?: ,. The City of,Rosemount is looking for a funding source to purchase books for the community as part of a city -wide book reading campaign. The month of October will be dedicated to various activities highlighting aspects of the book. Funding for the book purchase would allow residents an`opportunity to access the book, for those who cannot afford to purchase the book -or who are unable to reserve the limited copies on hand at+the local library. vl Who We Are: The Rosemount Community Leaders group is a collaborative effort formed in 2009 and is made up of many local representatives such as Branch Manager of Robert Trail Library; pastors from area churches such as Lighthouse Community Church, Rosemount United Methodist Church and Community of Hope Church; and school principals from Red Pine, Shannon Park and Rosemount Elementary, Middle and High Schools. Other members of the group include Mayor Bill Droste, City Administrator Dwight Johnson, Assistant Administrator Emmy Foster, Police Chief Gary Kalstabakken, Parks Director Dan Schultz, along with YMCA and Rosemount Rotary representatives and representatives from 360 Communities (formally known as Community Action Council). What We Are Doing: We are working on a collaborative effort between all parties listed above to bring a, community wide event to Rosemount entitled "One Book, One Rosemount." The event will take place during October 2010 and includes a full month of events and activities revolving around the selected book. The book our group chose is A Long Way Home from Chicago by Richard Peck. In summary, A Long Way Home from Chicago -is a coming of age novel. Joey Dowdel grows from a nine -year old child who is intimidated by Grandma Dowdel to a young man of fifteen who has gained respect and love for his grandmother. As a young child he took Grandma at face value, but as the summers progressed, a more mature Joey grows in his understanding of human nature and insight into Grandma Dowdel and who she really is. When Will Our Event Take Place: We are working on a list of activities for the entire month of October 2010. These activities may include: book author visit (Richard Peck), big band and swing dancers,. time capsule' I National Guard gun drill, gangster talk, kids event to include pie eating contest, jump roping, hopscotch, yo -yo's, board games, marbles and jacks games. We also would like to have an antique car show, a radio program, a professor speak about the Great Depression, a panel discussion about history, tap dancing, quilting demonstrations, a`30s fashion show and .a community food drive. Program and event themes would include topics such as truth, justice, ethics, the Great Depression, the 1930s era, travel, the Midwest, small towns, humor and imagination. Why Is Our Program Important ?: The goals of our community program include: Reinforcing a sense of community by collaborating, publicizing and focusing efforts to promote one book title to the residents of Rosemount, MN; involving community leaders, schools, churches, families and teens by choosing a book that can be read or listened to by younger chapter book readers but will also have wide' intergenerational appeal; using themes in the book to promote a month of community programs, events and activities that appeal to diverse audiences; promoting literacy, generating awareness of the library and reinforcing its importance in the community; and celebrating the joy of reading and discussing literature. { r i f 3. How Will The Money Be Used ?: L We are looking for a sponsor to purchase `as many copies of the book A Long. Way Home from Chicago by Richard Peck to provide to anyone in our community a chance to read the book and enjoy all the free, events taking place throughout the month of October. Along with copies of the book being available in our library, we hope to have copies available in all the area public and private schools, churches, community centers and city facilities, coffee shops, businesses, senior housing units and . apartments. The books will be purchased through the library at a cost of $4.56 each. With a $2000.00 „donation from Taco John's we would be thrilled to purchase 438 books to hand out to residents of i.
