Droste, Mayor AGENDA NO. Sa. ATTACHMENTS: APPROVED BY: RECOMMENDED ACTION: Presentation of certificate of commendation A teacher at Red Pine Elementary School, which serves part of Rosemount, was honored this summer with a national award for her work with the families of students who are designated as English Language Learners. Magaly Miralles received the George I. Sanchez Award, presented annually by the National Education Association to an individual whose activities have made significant improvements in educational opportunities and advanced the achievement of equal opportunity for Hispanics. The national award was presented last month. Ms. Miralles came to the United States as an 8- year -old girl from Venezuela, unable to speak English. Her personal experience has informed her work with Red Pine students, for whom she started pilot programs in collaborative teaching and in extended services for kindergarten students receiving E.L.L. services. A significant part of her work is getting to know the children and their families, and connecting the families with the community services they often need. She was recognized for her work in 2008 by Education Minnesota, which then forwarded her name to the national group. Ms. Miralles remembers the time when she first arrived in America, struggling with the new culture and going home in tears each day after school. She is dedicating her life to making sure other children do not share that anguish.
