City Council Regular Meeting: October 7, 2008
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
ISSUE
Regular City Council meetings are held the first and third Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall.
Work Session meetings are held the second Wednesday after the first Tuesday of each month.
Occasionally meeting dates are changed to avoid conflicts with holidays or other events.
A meeting date change is necessary for the regular work session scheduled for October 15. Due to a
conflict with scheduling, the proposed meeting date and time is October 14, 2008 at 8:30 p.m. The 8:30
p.m. start was determined because of the Sign Committee and Dakota County Regional Chamber
Candidate Forum scheduled earlier in the evening.
A meeting date change is also necessary for the first meeting in November. November 4 is statutorily
provided for the General Election Day from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on the first Tuesday in November in
every state general election year. Public meetings cannot be held until 8:00 p.m. on Election Day.
Therefore, it is proposed to change the November 4 meeting date to November 5, 2008 in order to avoid
conflict with the law.
The City Council is required to canvass election results within seven days of the General Election. A
special meeting will be required. Staff has proposed holding the special meeting on November 5 at 7:15
p.m.
CONCLUSION
Staff recommends approval of the above stated motion.
