RECOMMENDED ACTION: Presentation of certificate of commendation
The organization, the Art Educators of Minnesota, recognizes students each year with its Future Art
Educator Spotlight Award. This year, one of two recipients in the state is a student at Rosemount High
School, Grace Erickson. As we meet her tonight to offer the City's commendation, we will see samples
of her work.
Early last month, the Art Educators of Minnesota's Governing Council selected Grace based on her essay
and outstanding credentials. The purpose of the award is to acknowledge graduating seniors who have
demonstrated a high level of artistic and academic abilities as well as skills in interpersonal relationships
and leadership. The award is intended to encourage recipients to pursue a career in visual art education.
The selection of Grace was predicated on the opinion of her instructor at Rosemount High, Richard
Mittelstadt, that Grace has strong potential to be a qualified instructor. The selection was made based on
an essay and her credentials.
Mr. Mittelstadt's nomination demonstrated that Grace exemplifies what society is looking for in educators
today. She is intelligent and hardworking, as shown by her grade point average of 3.9. She has proven to
be responsible and dependable in her work as President of Rosemount High School's chapter of the
National Art Honor Society. Grace is energetic and helpful, proven by her membership in the National
Honor Society, in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, as a Sunday school helper, and as Director of Art
and Photography for the school's literary arts magazine.
As further testimony to Grace's character, she was chosen as this year's Most Valuable Tennis Player by
her fellow teammates. As a very talented and self motivated artist, Grace has received four Scholastic Arts
Awards in the past two years for her outstanding artwork while working on her senior Advanced
Placement portfolio. As a positive role model, Grace was recently chosen Rosemount High School Art
Department Student of the Year. More importantly, Grace is a pleasant, patient, and caring young woman.
She has a commendable curiosity, admirable work ethic, and a charming personality.
She is .currently working to complete a 25 -piece jewelry portfolio for the A.P. Studio Art course at
Rosemount High. In October, she will pursue her passion for art and for designing and creating jewelry in
the Gemological Institute of America's Graduate Jeweler Program in Carlsbad, Calif.
