CITY COUNCIL
City Council Work Session: May 14, 2008
EXEeUTIVE SUMMARY
BACKGROUND
In 2006, the Minnesota Legislature provided funding to study the potential of transit from the Union
Depot in St. Paul to County Road 42. Over the last year, City staff has been working with the other
members of the technical advisory committee (TAC) to determine the most appropriate transit corridor
between downtown St. Paul and Rosemount. The transit study also included a steering committee (on
which Rosemount was represented by Larry Laukka) and a series of public open houses. The long term
recommendation from the TAC is a transitway (potentially light rail) from the Union Depot along US
HWY 52 to I494, along I494 to MN HWY 149, along MN HWY 149 to MN HWY 3, then along the
Progress rail line east of MN HWY 3 to downtown Rosemount and potentially to UMore Park. A map of
the long term corridor vision is attached to this summary.
Sam O'Connell from the Dakota County Office of Transit and Rick Nau of URS will be in attendance to
provide a 15 minute presentation on the study and address any questions.
