4 ROSEMOUNT
CITY COUNCIL
City Council Regular Meeting: December 2, 2008
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
December 31 will mark the end of twenty -four years of representation of Rosemount in the Minnesota
House of Representatives by Dennis Ozment. Rep. Ozment decided not to run for reelection this year,
bringing to completion his work at the Capitol that began when he was sworn into office in January 1985.
We would require one of the "midnight sessions" that the Representative had to endure in St. Paul if we
were to list all of his accomplishments. Among the most notable for our community:
He obtained state funding for the Rosemount Armory /Community Center the first of its kind as
a joint city /state effort
He helped bring to a successful conclusion to the MSP Airport Re- location /Dual Track Planning
Process which was a seven -year effort to determine if a new airport should be built in on
Rosemount's doorstep. It ended in 1996 when the Legislature decided that Minnesota did not
need and could not afford a new airport.
In that effort, he organized the citizen group SOAR (Stop Our Airport Relocation) to participate
in the airport relocation effort, to make sure unbiased reports were issued that would lead to the
best decision for Minnesota and Dakota County.
He invested the personal effort to work with MnDOT to install stop lights at two deadly
intersections: Highways 52/46 in Coates and Highways 3/46 in Rosemount.
He has supported local control on government issues and also public education at the K-12 level
as well as our technical colleges and state universities.
Many of those issues were of particular benefit to Rosemount. Like the rest of the state, we share in Rep.
Ozment's accomplishments in several other issues: his focus on Minnesota's environment and authorship
of the Clean Water Legacy Act; his service as Chair of the House Environment Policy and Finance
Committees for several years; and on countless matters, his well-known ability to work across party lines
and bring consensus to difficult issues.
In the words on the plaque we will present:
The Rosemount City Council commends DENNIS OZMENT:
On behalf of the citizens of Rosemount, we thank you for improving the lives of our residents.
For twenty -four years, you have provided leadership through your representation of our
community at the Minnesota Legislature. Your work will provide Rosemount with lasting benefits
in the protection of our citizens and our environment. We are a better City because you served.
Thank you.
