City Council Regular Meeting: May 6, 2008
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The Rosemount Public Works Department is a team of 19 people dedicated to maintaining a safe, clean,
and enjoyable environment for all residents and businesses. The team's mission is to enhance the quality
of life through responsive, efficient, and cost effective delivery of services consistent with community
values.
The Department consists of an Operations Superintendent, a Public Works Supervisor, 15 maintenance
workers, and two mechanics. They are busy throughout the year maintaining 100 miles of streets, 85 miles
of sidewalks and bike trails, and 360 acres in 23 parks throughout the City.
The most visible activities include street sweeping, hydrant flushing, mowing, and plowing streets. Behind
the scenes, personnel maintain more than 200 pieces of equipment, 61 City vehicles, and 23 heavy
machines including street sweepers, tractors, loaders, utility trucks, snowblowers, and lawnmowers.
Efficient and cost effective fleet management is the backbone of the Department, keeping the vehicles and
equipment in peak condition.
Another behind -the- scenes activity is the ongoing maintenance of the underground infrastructure system,
including 119 miles of watermain, 90 miles of sanitary sewer, and 78 miles of storm sewer. Crews spend
much of the summer cleaning the sanitary and storm sewer systems in order to prevent costly backups and
overflows. Crews also ensure proper functioning of the water supply and distribution system, which
includes eight wells, four towers, and more than 1,000 hydrants. Residents receive an annual report
assuring them that our regular water testing and sampling yields safe, clean drinking water for all residents.
We call on all citizens and civic organizations in Rosemount to acquaint themselves with the issues
involved in providing our public works and to recognize the contributions which Rosemount Public
Works employees make every day to our health, safety, comfort, and quality of life. Recognizing the
commitment to maintain a safe and efficient infrastructure for our community, the City Council is asked to
join in the designation of National Public Works Week, for which the national theme is: "Public Works:
The Future is Now."
