RECOMMENDED ACTION: Presentation of the Certificate of Appreciation COUNCIL ACTION: Scout's building project through Catholic Charities Furniture Warehouse helps people in need By Dave Hrbaeek The Catholic Spirit Ryan Spindler of St. Joseph in Rose- mount showed an interest in building things when he was just 5 years old. His parents, Cindy and Mark, saw his eyes light up at the prospect of helping his dad with a household project. "When he was in kindergarten, he was interested in helping Mark finish off the basement," Cindy said. "He'was telling his friend's mom on the playground about wiring the basement." The interest continues today as the 15- year -old works to become an Eagle Scout. He recently completed a project that involved building dressers for Catholic Charities' Furniture Warehouse, a pro- gram in which needy farilies can get . home furnishings they normally could rh,ot afford. Projects of that type are te. quired for those "trying to become Eagle Scouts. An article in The Catholic Spirit Oct. 25, 2001, about the Furniture Warehouse program inspired Ryan to make dresser building his project. First, he raised S 787 to buy materials. Then he organized a crew of other Scouts and adults to build the dressers. On June 12, the crew com- pleted the assembly at Catholic Chari- ties. The project took 276 hours to com- plete. Ryan has only one more merit badge (personal fitness) left to earn. He expects to become an Eagle Scout this fall. "All things considered, it went pretty smoothly — a couple of mishaps here and there, but nothing that couldn't be fixed," Ryan said. 'I think Dad was pretty excited to get the wood (for the dressers] out of the [family's] garage. He wanted his garage back."
