As you know, the City is working with Dakota County and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources
(DNR) to preserve the Wiklund Property. Staff would like to submit a grant application to the DNR to receive
funding from the DNR Remediation Grant program. The Remediation Grant program provides funding to
acquire lands for protection and restoration of natural resources, compensating - the State of Minnesota for
damage to resources from the release of hazardous substances from closed landfills.
Through networking with other units of government staff learned that the Wiklund Property is located within
the watershed area of a closed landfill located in Inver Grove Heights. If the City does receive funding for this
project it will be used to assist in the purchase of the conservation easement on the Wiklund Property. The grant
application deadline is March 31, 2004.
