I t ii A 1 ATTACHMENTS: PROCLAMATIONS -5 APPROVED BY: RECOMMENDED ACTION: Motion to proclaim May 14 and 15 Rosemount Poppy Days for the American Legion Auxiliary and Veterans of Foreign Wars and Auxiliary. ACTION: ISSUE Proclaim Poppy Days BACKGROUND Mary Kropelnicki, representing the American Legion Auxiliary, approached the City to make a proclamation for Poppy Days in Rosemount on May 14 and May 15. A copy of Governor Pawlenty's proclamation for Mayas Poppy Month is attached. It promotes respect for those killed in war and veterans and their families. SUMMARY In support of the military personnel that have given so much of their lives to benefit this nation, I would recommend the above motion to issue a proclamation for Poppy Days in Rosemount. CITY OF ROSEMO U N T CITY HALL 2875 - 145th Street West Rosemount, MN 55068 -4997 Phone: 651- 423 -4411 Hearing Impaired: 651 -423 -6219 Fax: 651 -423 -5203 PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, the poppy, as a memorial flower for the American dead, is a tradition which began in the years following the First World War; and WHEREAS, the Veterans returning to their homes in this country after World War I remembered the wild poppies which lined the devastated battlefields of France and Flanders Field; and WHEREAS, the poppy is a symbol of hope for all veterans who served this great country through military service; and WHEREAS, the American Legion Auxiliary adapted the poppy as its memorial flower to pay tribute to the war dead and aid the living veteran and their family. THEREFORE, as Mayor of the City of Rosemount, I hereby do proclaim: POPPY DAYS May 14 and May 15, 2004 in the City of Rosemount and urge all citizens pay tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the name of freedom by wearing the Memorial Poppy on this day. Droste Date rI�gr ST SOTA yroclamarlon WHEREAS: The American Legion Auxiliary, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary have adopted the poppy as their commemorative symbol; and WHEREAS: The memorial poppy, assembled by disabled veterans, pays respectful tribute to those killed in war, and also benefits living veterans and their families; and WHEREAS Public donation for poppies fund rehabilitation programs within each local community that benefits veterans, their families, and ultimately our state and nation. Now THEREFORE I, TIM PAWLENTY, Governor of Minnesota, do hereby proclaim the month of May 2004, as: POPPY MONTH in the State of Minnesota.
