For City Council consideration is a recommendation to promote John Sommers to the position of Police
Sergeant. This process for this promotion was conducted internally; four current employees applied.
The process required the candidates to complete four different exercises: first, the participants were asked to
submit a prepared statement of what they believed the role of sergeant to be; next they were asked to prepare a
oral briefing of a specific departmental policy; thirdly they completed an in- basket exercise and finally they
participated in panel oral interview. Upon completion of these components, the candidates then met
individually with the Police Chief
John has been with the Police Department since February 1986. Besides the role of Patrol Officer, John has also
been the Community Resource (DARE) Officer. Currently, he serves as the School Resource Officer. It is
anticipated that John will start in his new position May 5, 2003 pending Council approval.
RECOMMENDED ACTION: MOTION TO APPROVE THE PROMOTION OF JOHN SOMMERS TO
THE POSITION OF POLICE SERGEANT.
