BURT, CITY ADMINISTRATOR AMi01.1 6 J ATTACHMENTS: RESOLUTION APPROV X CITY OF ROSEMOUNT EXECUTIVE SUMMARY FOR ACTION CITY COUNCIL MEETING DATE: MAY 7, 2002 The Rosemount Chamber has asked City Council to consider the attached resolution deferring local action on smoke free restaurants and bars until State wide regulations are put into place. Hastings, Fannington, and West St. Paul have already approved the resolution. Eagan will consider this on May 7th as well. RECOMMENDED ACTION: Motion to approve A RESOLUTION DEFERRING ACTION OF THE ISSUE OF SMOKIN IN RESTARUANTS AND BARS UNTIL STATEWIDE REGULATIONS ARE ENACTED. COUNCIL ACTION: CITY OF ROSEMOUNT DAKOTA COUNTY, MINNESOTA RESOLUTION 2002 A RESOLUTION DEFERRING ACTION OF THE ISSUE OF SMOKING IN RESTAURANTS AND BARS UNTIL STATEWIDE REGULATIONS ARE ENACTED WHEREAS, smoking ban ordinances have been proposed in various cities throughout the State of Minnesota, and WHEREAS, those cities that have considered a smoking ban ordinance have spent considerable time and effort, at great expense, to study the issue and draft ordinances dealing with smoking in restaurants and bars; and WHEREAS, the debate regarding a local smoking ban ordinance has been very divisive in some of the cities that considered adopting such an ordinance; and WHEREAS, the Rosemount City Council believes the issue of smoking in restaurants and bars within the State of Minnesota would best be handled by a State Statute that would have uniform statewide application; and WHEREAS, the Rosemoamt City Council believes that it is in the best interests of the City of Rosemount and its business, hospitality and tourism industries that any action on a smoking ban ordinance be deferred until such time that the State of Minnesota adopts uniform statewide regulations; and NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, by the City of Rosemount that the issue of smoking in restaurants and bars will defer action to the State of Minnesota until such time statewide regulations are adopted.
