This year the NPPS has announced that Playground Safety Week will be April 23 - 27, 2001. Playground Safety Week is a time for everyone to focus on playground safety and to advocate safety and injury prevention on our nation's playgrounds. The Parks and Recreation Department will be contacting members of the local media asking ask them to publish information about Playground Safety Week. We will also be asking residents to look for hazards at their local playground and report them to the owner of the site. Attached is the proclamation by the City of Rosemount identifying April 23 -27 as Playground Safety Week. The Parks and Recreation Department and other City Staff will work in conjunction with local residents to make our playgrounds a safe place to play. RECOMMENDED ACTION: Motion to approve the proclamation identifying April 23 -27, 2001 as Playground Safety Week in Rosemount. COUNCIL ACTION: CITY OF ROSEMOUNT PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, THE SAFETY AND WELL BEING OF CHILDREN IS A PRIORITY OF THIS CITY; AND WHEREAS, MORE THAN 200,000 CHILDREN ARE INJURED ON PLAYGROUNDS IN THE UNITED STATES EACH YEAR EQUALING AN AVERAGE OF ONE PLAYGROUND RELATED EMERGENCY ROOM VISIT EVERY TWO - AND -ONE -HALF MINUTES; AND WHEREAS, THE NATIONAL PROGRAM FOR PLAYGROUND SAFETY HAS BEEN CREATED AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTHERN IOWA TO HELP INFORM THE NATION ABOUT PLAYGROUND INJURIES AND POSSIBLE WAYS TO REDUCE THE NUMBER OF INJURIES: AND WHEREAS, THE NATIONAL PROGRAM FOR PLAYGROUND SAFETY HAS IDENTIFIED KEY AREAS THAT COULD HELP SUBSTANTL -kLLY REDUCE THE NUMBER OF PLAYGROUND INJURIES AND KEEP OUR CHILDREN SAFE - PROVIDING PROPER SUPERVISION, AGE APPROPRIATE EQUIPMENT, MATERIALS TO SOFTEN FALLS TO THE SURFACE, AND EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE; AND WHEREAS, IT IS APPROPRIATE TO SET ASIDE A WEEK EACH YEAR FOR THE DIRECTION AND THOUGHT ON HOW TO KEEP OUR CHILDREN SAFER ON PLAYGROUNDS; AND WHEREAS, SPRING IS OFTEN A TIME THAT CHILDREN HEAD TO THE PLAYGROUND AND A LARGE PERCENTAGE OF PLAYGROLND INJURIES OCCUR FROM APRIL THROUGH JUNE; AND WHEREAS, SCHOOLS, PARKS AND OTHER PUBLIC FACILITIES ARE PREPARING FOR SUMMER SEASON AND PLAYGROUND PARTICIPANTS: AND WHEREAS, ALL OF US THAT CARE ABOUT CHILDREN MAKE THE CONLVIITMENT THAT NO ROSEMOUNT CHILD SHALL PLAY ON AN UNSAFE PLAYGROUND;AND WHEREAS, THE NATIONAL PROGRAM FOR PLAYGROUND SAFETY IL-kS DESIGNATED APRIL 23 - 27, 2001, AS NATIONAL PLAYGROUND SAFETY WEEK. NOW THEREFORE, I CATHY BUSHO, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF ROSE�IOUNT, DO HEREBY CLAIM APRIL 23 - 27 AS NATIONAL PLAYGROUND SAFETY WEEK IN THE CITY OF ROSEMOUNT AND I URGE ALL CITIZENS TO VISIT YOUR LOCAL PLAYGROUNDS.
