This is a request for Council to consider approving an amendment to the Relief Association Bylaws that would
increase the yearly pension amount from $2500 a year to $2600 a year.
The Relief Association is responsible for overseeing funds for a retirement program for the city's firefighters.
The Relief Association receives funding from three main sources: state fire aid,municipal contributions and
investment earnings.
The current level of$2500 is paid out according to years of service and rules established within the Relief
Association Bylaws. The City Council approved the current level in February 1998, and the members of the
Relief Association have requested that Council consider increasing this amount to $2600. The amount of
$26,000 has been budgeted for payment to the Relief Association, and this amount will more than cover the
city's obligation of funding if the retirement benefit is increased to $2600.
Attached for Council review is Article VIII, Section 6 of the Bylaws illustrating the payment based on years of
service if the yearly pension was increased to $2600. Also attached is a survey of cities similar in size and
surrounding communities that have relief associations. It will give you an idea how the city's pay, contribution
and pension amount compare to other cities.
RECOMMENDED ACTION: MOTION TO INCREASE THE YEARLY PENSION AMOUNT TO
$2600 PER YEAR OF SERVICE AND TO APPROVE AN AMENDMENT TO THE FIREFIGHTERS
