Proposal to Reduce the Water Level in the Birger Pond
We all agree that the water level in this pond should be controlled. However, the
magnitude of the change is a definite source of concern for us.
It is our understanding that the above proposal calls for reducing the high water level in
the Birger Pond anywhere from five to ten feet from the"cunent level". If the high water
level is reduced as planned, the average water level is likely to be many feet below this
new"high water" level and the low water level, specially during drought periods, will be
many more feet below the new average level.
In our view such a change would drastically reduce the size of the pond and will
completely diminish and change the natural beauty of the surrounding area permanently.
For example, some of the smaller ponds surrounding the Birger Pond will completely dry
out and cease to exist. Also, the large bird population that inhabits the pond and the
surrounding land will lose its habitat. The pond, except in few isolated areas, is very
shallow and therefore any major reduction in the water level would simply create a very
large mud pool that is very unattractive and dangerous.
In addition, it is also our understanding that one of the reasons for the proposed change is
to recover some of the land, now under water, to build a park in the new Keller Property
development located to the North of the pond. Also, according to the above property
development proposal, some of the land now under water will be filled to make room for
some of the new proposed hames in this development. Building new homes and a park at
the expense of the Birger pond, in our view, is a poor trade-off..
The Birger Pond as it sta.nds today is a major attraction in the neighborhood and we like
to request that we keep the water level changes to a rninimum. Simply moving back to
the "historical high water levels" without paying attention to the current conditions and
needs will not improve the quality of the neighborhoods that surround's the Birger Pond.
Thank you for soliciting our views on this matter.
