The city received the attached letter of resignation from Don Jerde,who works in the Public Works
Maintenance Department as the custodian for City Hall and other city buildings. Don has been with the
city since August of 1988, and his enthusiasm,hard work and great attitude will be sorely missed. Don
and his wife are moving to Arizona to enjoy a warmer climate and to be near his family.
As you are aware,we are currently in the process of reviewing applications for another Public Works
Maintenance Department opening. We received over 60 applications for that position. As we discussed
at the July COW meeting, staff had understood that Mr. Jerde was going to resign near the end of 1999
and,therefore,had planned in the yeaz 2000 Budget to replace his custodial duties by contracting out to
a private business. We currently utilize a contractor for the Fire Station No. 1 and the Public Works
building. With council's authorization, staff would begin contracting out custodial duties after pon's
last day and hire another maintenance worker as soon as possible who would do general streets and Park
&Rec field maintenance. This would give us an opportunity to have two new people on board in
September and to be acclimated to the city prior to the winter snow season. Staff recommends the action
be taken as described below.
RECOMMENDED ACTION: MOTION TO ACCEPT THE RESIGNATION OF DON JERDE AND
TO AUTHORIZE STAFF TO BEGIN THE REPLACEMENT PROCESS AS DESCRIBED IN THIS
EXECUTIVE SUlVIlV1ARY.
